How to choose a vase for a bouquet, not just an attractive decorative vessel
The right vase supports the stems, remains stable and complements the bouquet without competing with it. The choice should therefore not start with colour or material alone. Compare the stem height, arrangement volume, opening width and weight of the base. A photograph is a useful style guide, but the actual dimensions determine whether the two products will work together.
How do size and opening change the bouquet?
A narrower opening gathers the stems and helps a small or loose bouquet retain its shape. A wider opening gives more stems room and creates a broader silhouette, but it may leave a small arrangement without enough support. A taller vase supports long roses and branches; a lower vessel suits compact bouquets and table centrepieces. There is no single universal proportion because the opening, shape and weight all affect the required height.

A vase for roses, a large bouquet or artificial flowers
For a standard fresh flower bouquet, choose a vessel that supports enough of the stems without compressing them. A bouquet of 51 or 101 roses needs a much larger, heavier and more stable vessel with sufficient water capacity. With 101 roses, dividing the arrangement between two vases can sometimes be more practical if its construction allows it.
For artificial flowers and branches, the vessel does not need to hold water, but it should remain stable and have a suitable opening. A clear vase leaves stems and internal supports visible; a ceramic vase conceals them and creates a more finished silhouette.
Can a vase be a gift?
A vase is a suitable gift when it matches the interior and the way the recipient uses flowers. For a more versatile choice, look for a simple shape and neutral tone. If you know the person’s taste well, a stronger shape or colour can make the vessel a standalone accent. When giving a vase and bouquet together, compare dimensions and stability rather than relying on the colours in the photographs alone.
Cleaning before a new bouquet
Wash the vase before every new bouquet with warm water, a suitable detergent and a brush that reaches the base and narrow areas. Rinse well so no detergent remains. Simply topping up fresh water over old water is not enough. Check the product instructions before using a dishwasher, abrasive cleaner or very hot water because suitable care depends on the material and finish.
